Satanas,

Σατανᾶς ,

Satan, G4567, opponent

`

Why are there two names, (1) SATAN and (2) DEVIL, in the Bible versions?

In the OT, the Jewish scholars of the Greek translation LXX usedthe diabolos” [οG3588 διαβολοςStrong's#G1228] instead of the Hellenized “the Satan” [ο Σαταν Strong's #G4566]. The King James Version rather uses the “Masoretic” text* with its Hebrew שָׂטָןStrong's # H7854 ; i.e., saw-tawn': pronounced saw-tawn', it is the same as our Anglicized Satan or in this case obviously the Hellenized Aramaic Hebrew.

*KJV's OT uses an 1000 year old Hebrew manuscript compilation for translation; but the Greek translation LXX was used by early Christians in the Roman Empire. The non-Christian Jews eventually stopped using the LXX. But the Masoretic compilation from 1000 AD is what was used to translate the KJV OT.

#H7854. Strong's definition: a. an opponent; b. Satan, the arch enemy of good, especially (with the article prefixed): - translated as adversary, or Satan, or withstand.

Note: Strong's #G4566 identifies the Greek in the OT LXX and translates H7854.

Is Satan only a PERSONIFICATION of evil?

Definition of 'personification': figurative language from personify--giving to an inanimate being the figure or the sentiments and language of a rational being.

FACT: "Satan" is not simply a personification of evil influences in the heart, for an entity actually tempted the Christ, in whose heart no evil thought could ever have arisen. “I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me(John 14:30, ASV). “Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21 ASV}. “For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15, ASV). Moreover, his personality (being) is asserted in both the OT and the NT, and especially in the latter. If the OT language was intended to be figurative, the NT would have made this evident. Old Testament:

Summary of the Old Testament's use of "Satan": a Greek form (Strong's numbers G4566 and G4567) derived through the Aramaic (from the Hebrew, Satan H7854) means "an adversary; an opponent." It is used (a) of an angel of Jehovah in Numbers 22:22 (the first occurrence in the Bible); (b) of men, e.g., 1 Samuel 29:4; (c) of "Satan," the Devil, some seventeen or eighteen times in the OT; in Zechariah 3:1 , where the name receives its interpretation, "to be (his) adversary," RV (see marg.; AV, "to resist him"). Notice its root word H7853 meaning "attack, adversary, resist" is used in Psalm 38:20; 71:13; and in Psalm 109:6;

Numbers 22:22 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversaryH7854 against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. references an angel of Jehovah

Numbers 22:32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? Behold, I went out to withstandH7854 thee, because thy way is perverse before me: references an angel of Jehovah

1 Samuel 29:4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, ...lest in the battle he be an adversaryH7854 to us: references David.

2 Samuel 19:22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversariesH7854 unto me? references sons of Zeruiah.

1 Kings 5:4 But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversaryH7854 nor evil occurrent. references national enemies.

The following 4 verses uses G4566 in the Greek LXX to represent the Hebrew H7854. There is no SatanG4566.

1 Kings 11:14 And the LORD stirred up an adversaryH7854 unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: references an enemy Hadad. Note: The LXX Greek has G4566 as adversary .

1 Kings 11:23 And God stirred him up another adversary,H7854 Rezon the son of Eliadah, references Rezon. Note: The LXX Greek has G4566 as adversary

1 Kings 11:25 And he was an adversaryH7854 to Israel all the days of Solomon, references an enemy of Solomon Note: The LXX Greek has adversary for G4566

1 Chronicles_21:1 And SatanH7854 stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. references the Devil. Note: The ABP+ Greek interprets SATAN for G4566. Cf. to 2 Samuel 24:1 where it is the Lord moving David fo sin. Census taking in the context was against the Law. "And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah." Fact: the Lord therefore permits (authorizes) temptations from Satan. Nevertheless, the Lord God is still in control. Satan is not another deity as the Babylonians taught.
